Khái niệm và ứng dụng thực tiễn

So sánh hơn (comparative degree) là một trong ba cấp độ so sánh trong tiếng Anh, bên cạnh so sánh ngang bằng (positive degree) và so sánh nhất (superlative degree). Cấu trúc so sánh hơn được sử dụng khi muốn thể hiện sự khác biệt về một đặc điểm nào đó giữa hai đối tượng hoặc nhóm đối tượng.

Ví dụ:

• This book is thicker than that one. (Cuốn sách này dày hơn cuốn kia.)

• She runs faster than her brother. (Cô ấy chạy nhanh hơn anh trai mình.)

Theo English Grammar in Use [1], so sánh hơn thường đi kèm với liên từ than để kết nối hai đối tượng được so sánh. Tuy nhiên, trong một số trường hợp, than có thể bị lược bỏ khi nghĩa vẫn rõ ràng từ ngữ cảnh.

Ví dụ:

• This hotel is more comfortable. (Khách sạn này tiện nghi hơn.)

Nguyên tắc xây dựng và công thức so sánh hơn

Quy tắc so sánh hơn đối với tính từ có âm tiết ngắn

Tính từ ngắn (short adjectives) là những từ có một âm tiết hoặc hai âm tiết nhưng kết thúc bằng -y, -le, -er, hoặc -ow. Khi sử dụng dạng so sánh hơn, ta thêm -er vào cuối tính từ.

Công thức:

Ví dụ:

• This bag is cheaper than that one. (Cái túi này rẻ hơn cái kia.)

• He is taller than his brother. (Anh ấy cao hơn anh trai mình.)

Quy tắc chính tả đặc biệt:

• Nếu tính từ kết thúc bằng -y, đổi y thành i rồi thêm -er.

  • Ví dụ: happy → happier, busy → busier

• Nếu tính từ kết thúc bằng một phụ âm và trước đó là một nguyên âm đơn, ta nhân đôi phụ âm cuối trước khi thêm -er.

  • Ví dụ: big → bigger, hot → hotter

Cách thức so sánh hơn dành cho tính từ đa âm tiết

Tính từ dài (long adjectives) là những tính từ có từ hai âm tiết trở lên, trừ các trường hợp đặc biệt như tính từ hai âm tiết kết thúc bằng -y. Khi sử dụng dạng so sánh hơn, ta thêm more trước tính từ thay vì thêm -er.

• This test is more difficult than the last one. (Bài kiểm tra này khó hơn bài trước.)

• She is more intelligent than her classmates. (Cô ấy thông minh hơn các bạn cùng lớp.)

Lưu ý: Một số tính từ hai âm tiết có thể dùng cả hai dạng (-er hoặc more), như polite, quiet, simple:

• quieter hoặc more quiet

• simpler hoặc more simple

Tuy nhiên, theo A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language [2], dạng ngắn với -er phổ biến hơn trong văn nói, trong khi dạng more + adj thường được dùng trong văn viết trang trọng.

Phương pháp so sánh hơn khi sử dụng trạng từ

Trạng từ (adverbs) cũng có dạng so sánh hơn, nhưng quy tắc khác biệt tùy vào loại trạng từ:

Với trạng từ ngắn (không có đuôi -ly): thêm -er

• fast → faster

• He runs faster than me. (Anh ấy chạy nhanh hơn tôi.)

Với trạng từ dài (có đuôi -ly): thêm more

• fluently → more fluently

• She speaks more fluently than her brother. (Cô ấy nói trôi chảy hơn anh trai mình.)

Những tính từ có dạng so sánh hơn không theo quy tắc thông thường

Một số tính từ không tuân theo quy tắc thông thường mà có dạng so sánh hơn đặc biệt. Dưới đây là danh sách các tính từ bất quy tắc phổ biến:

Lưu ý về "farther" và "further":

• Farther thường chỉ khoảng cách vật lý (physical distance).

  • The school is farther than the hospital. (Trường học xa hơn bệnh viện.)

• Further có thể dùng để chỉ khoảng cách vật lý hoặc mức độ trừu tượng (figurative distance).

  • We need further discussion on this topic. (Chúng ta cần thảo luận thêm về chủ đề này.)

Dạng so sánh hơn kép (Double Comparative) trong tiếng Anh

Cấu trúc so sánh hơn kép được sử dụng để diễn đạt sự gia tăng hoặc giảm dần của một đặc điểm nào đó.

Công thức:

Ví dụ:

• The harder you study, the better your results will be. (Bạn học càng chăm chỉ, kết quả càng tốt.)

• The more you practice, the more confident you become. (Bạn càng luyện tập nhiều, bạn càng tự tin hơn.)

Cấu trúc "Comparative and comparative" diễn tả sự tăng tiến (Càng ngày càng...)

Cấu trúc so sánh "Comparative and comparative" (Ngày càng…) được sử dụng để diễn tả sự thay đổi tăng dần của một sự vật hoặc sự việc.

• It’s getting colder and colder. (Trời ngày càng lạnh hơn.)

• He is becoming more and more confident. (Anh ấy đang ngày càng tự tin hơn.)

Lưu ý:

• Cấu trúc này thường dùng với động từ như get, become, grow, look, feel…

• Một số trường hợp đặc biệt như "less and less" được dùng để diễn tả mức độ giảm dần.
