"It is hard to know where to start to sing the praises of this extraordinary experience. Yes- to stay at Avana retreat is an experience, not just a "resort". Firstly, when we were shown to our Mountain View room (101), I couldn't help but shed some tears because it was so beautiful. The decor, the lighting, the deck, the bath, the bed...everything was exceptional. And of course the view was like looking at paradise, along with the sounds of the waterfall. The cloud pool was breathtaking. What a stroke of genius to place it where it is where guests can float around looking at the mountains, the valley, the rice paddies and the jungle. My husband and I had a massage at the spa, which was about as perfect as it can get, with beautiful service. Again the location next to a stream and little waterfalls was outstanding. But the most amazing part of staying at Avana is the story behind the retreat. It is an exemplary model of sustainable tourism. There are 26 villas on the hillside, but they are all discreetly hidden in the landscape. The amenities are all carefully chosen to be as considerate of their environment as possible. Water is supplied in glass bottles for guests (even a reusable thermos flask of water for the return limousine trip - not a plastic bottle! ) Breakfast is a la carte to save the waste usually associated with buffets. Even the pool is heated by a heat pump and the lights are turned off at 11pm to give the animals darkness for their nocturnal habits. The amazing lighting decor in the main dining area is based on local fish traps - is there anything that is not carefully thought about? No! The retreat provides employment for the local ethnic people who make up 95% of the staff and are highly trained by the excellent operational managers, who have risen to the challenge of making Avana work so well for everyone. Every single staff member is a delight to speak with and we had many joyful conversations. A special mention of Ms Khuyen, Li, An and Thai, although every staff member deserves a huge thank you, from the friendly buggy drivers to the cleaning staff. Thai even remembered that my husband had a soft spot for the mung bean cake for breakfast! Thank you also for the opportunity to learn and share in the handcrafts with local expert women. Congratulations to everyone - especially for the hard work to learn English. I was totally overwhelmed. I will never forget this place or the people. Thank you. "

"We stayed one night at the Bakhan Village Resort as part of a two-week tour in Vietnam. The resort is new, very well kept, clean and in an absolutely stunning environment. The landscaping is lush and beautiful—a creek with fish runs through the property. We saw many butterflies outside our room. Our room was spacious, clean and comfortable with a balcony overlooking the creek. The main lobby is beautiful inside with tall ceilings, nice furnishings, & local art. The staff, while most don’t speak English, is extremely attentive, sweet, and accommodating. Our stay included three meals, each of which was absolutely delicious, made fresh for our table and beautiful. Actually, we were too full from breakfast to eat our last lunch meal. We missed out, but just because we were too full. The views at this resort are gorgeous. One can see three layers of water—a pond, the infinity pool at the resort, and a very large lake way down below. There is a pool, bar, restaurant and pool bar. A local guy came to take us on a walk around the local village. He didn’t speak English, but it was no problem. It was interesting to see the local homes, yards, animals and their farm life. You should definitely visit the Bakhan Village Resort if you are in Northern Vietnam. It’s a nice respite from the hustle and bustle of Hanoi, which is about a 3.5 hour drive."
